Thompson Young

Kiawah Island Residence

Nestled in the natural barrier island environment, this home is the result of a highly collaborative design strategy between Thompson Young Design and the owners. The design seeks to clearly articulate the function of the home and to relate it to its immediate environment. The two tower elements surrounding the central living space host bedrooms and service elements, and their siding system is continuous to the ground plane, a unique feature in a low lying environment.  A central double height space and adjacent kitchen serve as an open area with access to the outdoors where the busy family can cook together, entertain friends, and catch up with each other. With native plantings and a rain water collection system for irrigation, the home has a sustainable approach to landscaping. The primary siding material from the house is sourced from a cradle to cradle sustainable supplier, and the HVAC system is a highly efficient Variable Refrigerant Volume System that allows for effective zoning of the house without the addition of an unnecessary number of condensing units. The result is a house that is sustainable by design, blends with and engages its environment, and is custom tailored to suit the lifestyle and aesthetic of the owner.
