About Thompson Young Design

An innovative design firm in downtown Charleston, Thompson Young Design has a reputation for improving the vitality of Lowcountry neighborhoods and for creating contemporary design in an historic environment. Co-owners Simons Young, AIA NCARB and Jonathan Thompson, LEED AP and Designer adhere to the philosophy that historic materials and methods can inform a more respectful design for the future, with a focus on conscientious, cohesive and integrated practices.

A great team delivers a better product—with Jon’s experience in LEED documentation of projects and Simons’ knowledge of historic rehabilitation, Thompson Young Design brings a powerful way to think about urban renewal, sustainability and adaptive re-use.

We value our community, its processes and personalities, and are committed to sustainable design—preferring to contract with local material providers and craftsmen, and to build in a way that adds new life to Charleston’s historic environment. With experience in green and LEED design, Thompson Young Design can integrate sustainable technology for your project, from green roofing and water management and local materials and labor, to alternative energy and material re-use. Our team is also skilled in providing LEED upgrades to historic buildings, residential and commercial renovations, digital fabrication and contemporary building technology.

ABOUT US

Since completion of Clemson University’s Master of Architecture program in 2006, Jonathan Thompson’s role with LS3P ASSOCIATES’ federal design studio included notable contribution on an Army Reserve office facility at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, and the 840,000 SF Missile Defense Agency Headquarters at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.  Jon, as a Revit Captain, led a team in the implementation and delivery of construction documentation using Building Information Modeling technology, and as a LEED accredited professional, he strives to optimize design through the use of sustainable design principles.

After practicing in San Francisco with renowned preservation architecture firm, Page & Turnbull, Simons Young returned to his native Charleston, bringing with him a profound respect for sustainability and experience in both large and small re-use, renovation and rehabilitation projects. While in California, his work ranged from multi-family residential in the historic district of Russian Hill, to the vast urban renewal project at Market Square, from the renovation of a 1908 golf club, to the adaptive reuse of historic Pier 15 into San Francisco’s new Exploratorium museum. Having worked for several firms in the Charleston area, he is well connected and familiar with the principles and constraints of design within the city’s historic context. Simons is a registered architect in the State of South Carolina.
